Weekend Re-Cap

CarmelKitchenHappy Monday Folks;  I had a great weekend and I hope you did too!

First up, I attended an event called Black Girls, Sipping White Wine at the Carmel Kitchen, through being a member of MeetUp.com!  The Carmel Kitchen, located at 140 N. Orlando Ave in Winter Park Florida, offers a beautiful ambiance, appetizing food, and happy hour 7 days a week, 4-7pm!

Not only does MeetUp keep me active and connected with like minded people, but it also exposes to me places I may not have visited in the past!  This event was casual and fun! As you can see, I’m still rocking my Thailand braids with one more week until they come out! At the two  month mark, I’m ready for a change.

Tapered Fro| New Hair, New Attitude!

Before & AfterI love the versatility of having natural hair! Since I did my big chop, I’ve only allowed scissors to come in contact with my hair every 3 months or so for a trim, until almost 2 years ago when boredom led to the decision to do a big mini chop!

I had them fade the back and sides, and for a while I was happy; after all, my cut was fly! I became frustrated with having to maintain the cut due to the fact that I was never able to find a barber that

10 Things You Need to Know About Getting a Faded Cut

KN_MiniBigChopI unequivocally love my fade! I’ve never had a funkier hairstyle and I’ve never been able to switch my look up so frequently!

I was steadfast in my decision and scoured the net for inspiration for my cut.  I was a bit unsure about what the repercussions would be at the office (or if I decided to change jobs), but I reasoned that I would still have enough hair to cover the shaved parts. I would unveil the full extent of the cut gradually. Only three people in the office noticed; my boss noticed about two months after I’d been wearing the cut and two other ladies noticed six months later.

Razor Burn, Cuts, & Bumps, Oh MY! | No Bueno

So I’ve been sporting (and loving) faded sides since April and I thought it was appropriate to discuss razor burn, cuts, and bumps; something anyone who shaves anything may have to deal with.  I’ve had to deal with razor burn or bumps while shaving but it never occurred to me that I could experience this around my hairline after a shape up.

What is Razor Burn?

Razor burn is “technically known as Folliculitis, which describes when the hair follicles become infected by a bacteria or fungus. This results in the irritated bumps and pimples that appear around the shaving area” – More at Ask Game Day.

Fierce Friday Gratuitous Post|CurlFest & Altering a Hair Style To Your Liking

CurlFest142909This past Saturday was CurlFest. Last year I participated in the show and I must say that my experience this year tops previous! From the professional hair stylists and make up artists at All Dolled Up Salon to the stylists from Franchesca’s, I was impressed.

 My Hair:

CurlFest_collageTo achieve this look, my hair was first flexi-rodded all over.

The Red Rods Were Used

I sat under the dryer for 45 minutes and went home with the rods still in my hair. Because I was going horseback riding the following morning, we thought the style would hold better and we could prevent shrinkage, if the rods were still in.

Check out the eye candy! Afro textured hair is so versatile; it’s one of my favorite things about having this texture. At different states, wet, dry, product, no product, the hair can take on a different appearance.

FF_Turban_AdI loved the way this headwrap design turned out! It took me about 5 minutes! Stay tuned for a pictorial next week.

Have a great weekend!

“I’ve Had to be Okay with Being Invisible to Men” |Wednesday’s Word

I absolutely love this article!

Here’s what I know: I’m cute and I have a great figure. Whoever sees me, sees me. Those to whom I am invisible didn’t merit my time in the first place.–Carolyn Edgar

I believe every woman who returns to natural hair via the big chop goes thorough what Carolyn went through. Although she went from mid-back length locs to a TWA, rather than from relaxed to natural hair, the shock of seeing one in a different way can be traumatizing and spur regrets if one does not do it for the right reasons…that reason (in my humble opinion) being because they want to! I think it makes you develop character, self acceptance and leads to self confidence.
