Natural Icon Throwback | Melba Tolliver

Melba Tolliver

In 1971 Melba Tolliver, a WABC-TV correspondent, made national headlines when she wore an afro while covering the wedding of Tricia Nixon Cox, daughter of President Richard Nixon. The station threatened to take Tolliver off of the air until the story caught national attention. Read More about this trailblazer here.

I pinned this on my Natural Hairspiration board on Pinterest, but thought it worthy of being posted here.

I Left My Heart In Puerto Rico…

But I’m going back to get it!

If you haven’t been to Puerto Rico, what are you waiting for? It’s beautiful all year long! Just pick a time and go!

The locals are warm and welcoming!

Special thanks to Tamara and Yari for a great time at Cafe’ la Plage
Met some great folks in PR!

One of the ladies I met put me on to a site called Couch Surfers. It’s the world’s largest traveling community. You can host a group traveling or travel and be hosted by a group in different parts of the world. Check it out!

2 Years Post Relaxer, 3 Months Post BC: Texture Shots!

It’s been nearly 3 months since I’ve done my BC and  I thought I’d share some texture shots! Since my BC, I’ve learned a lot about what my natural hair will and won’t do; her likes and dislikes. I’ve learned that I have low porosity, high density and elasticity natural hair. Knowing about the porosity alone helped me determine which types of products and moisture methods would (or wouldn’t) work for me. Check out my post on determining porosity, density, and elasticity.

Enjoy the hair porn!

Have you been keeping track of your hair journey?

I Took My Afro: Back to My Roots

My baby sis!
Fierce Friday!

This Labor Day weekend was epic for me.  I got to go home (#DMV) and hang out w/ friends and family. I spent the weekend mostly with my sister who I haven’t seen in 9 or 10 years.

It’s interesting to see siblings grow up. I left home for school when she was 12 years old so it was fun watching her as a woman.

Ode to the BIG CURLY FRO!

I love the Fro in general! It’s a beautiful halo that naturally adorns your head! You can pick it, spike it, mold it, shape it, and even curl it!  After your crown is perfect, accessorize it!

Enjoy the afrolicious eye candy!

I wondered how many people are so into ‘fros that they write about them…whaddya know!  People write poems about their love for their BAA (Big A$s Afro)!

My Afro Poem
