Natural Hair Essentials: Refined or Unrefined Oils?

Recently I took a trip to the Vitamin Shoppe to re-up on coconut oil; to my surprise, they were having a sale on the brand I like! I use the Spectrum brand which runs around $8 or so for 14oz of organic coconut oil. I use coconut oil for my skin, in my hair, and in my shea butter mix so I was excited to catch a deal. One thing stopped me in my tracks.

I’m an avid label reader. I’m that girl in the grocery store inspecting the product from the front on back to the ingredient label in the back of the product. What caught my eye was the fact that the refined oil was on sale, not the unrefined. I was bummed because I love the unrefined (virgin) oil! It smells delightful and the by it being unrefined, it maintains its most natural form and has gone through no artificial filtering or expeller pressing. Refined oils, on the other hand, is regarded as the lower quality oil because it has been refined, bleached and deodorized.

Now as you can see from the picture, I was being cheap that day and I purchased the refined coconut oil. I am truly kicking myself now because I’m not satisfied. The unrefined coconut oil has no smell what-so-ever, doesn’t seem to absorb in my skin the way the unrefined oil does and besides that, I just feel oily…which is a no-no for me.

If I were just using the oil to add to my shea butter mix, I would have less of a problem. I use the oil directly on my skin for it’s moisturizing benefits as well as for the orgasm it gives my olfactory glands! I can’t get enough of the smell 🙂

I guess it’s back to Vitamin Shoppe I go!

Do you purchase refined or unrefined oils?

  1. Coconut oil doesn’t work on my hair. And I’m very afraid to give it a new try after 2 years.
But Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose and Coconut Sublime conditioner by Curls works awesome on my hair *o* !

    1. Do oils in general not work on your hair or specifically coconut oil?
I recently did a porosity test and found that my low porosity hair was so greasy when I used oils because the oils don’t penetrate my strands well. Therefore when I moisturize my hair, I only add oil while it’s damp or wet and seal with a cream.
